The government has said rail infrastructure and services will not be impacted by the allocation of an additional £15bn of funding to defence over the next four years.

The additional defence funding which was included in the Defence Investment Plan published on June 30 has been found primarily by reallocating budgets from across government departments, with £10.3bn identified now and a further £4.7bn over four years to be confirmed later.

Departments have been asked to contribute 1p in every £1 of their capital budgets from this year, with the Department for Transport and the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero asked to contribute more as they have larger capital budgets. DfT will provide savings of up to £700m from its roads funding, and will also explore limited reductions to as yet uncommitted roads funding.
