CO-GREAT: CO-created Gamified Resilience Engagement Accessible Toolkit | DARe

Evaluation Report by Research Hub for Decarbonised Adaptable and Resilient Transport Infrastructures (DARe)

Rail transport systems are increasingly exposed to climate-related hazards and extreme weather conditions, particularly unexpected flooding that can damage infrastructure, disrupt services, and generate significant adverse economic and social impacts. Building future resilience in rail systems requires combining technical and engineering interventions with effective engagement involving diverse stakeholders in planning, funding, and operating transport infrastructure.

CO-GREAT explored how gamified participatory methods could best support discussions about flood resilience and sustainable investment in rail transport, contributing to DARe’s focus around decarbonised, adaptable, and resilient transport infrastructure transitions. The project worked with organisations in transport, research and civil society to co-create a set of short, modular gamified discussion exercises and facilitation materials, designed to support discussion of flood mitigation challenges. These resulting reusable tools help to provide added insight into sometimes underlying or implicit ways in which communities and stakeholders prioritise trade-offs between mitigation strategies, acceptance of costs, and information uncertainty, shaping future investment challenges for transport infrastructure.

CO-GREAT helps to inform means of gaining Insights into community preferences: willingness to pay for climate resilience and mitigation, around rail travel and flooding - combining the exercise from the Toolkit as a means of further investigating these questions with communities and stakeholders, alongside use of the workshop materials and analysis from existing literature. This Evaluation Report provides information on the project, including:
