Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has started a procurement process to deliver up to £1.6bn of infrastructure that will help to maintain and grow Metrolink- the UK’s largest light rail network – and improve rail accessibility within Greater Manchester.

The contract covers Metrolink’s asset renewals programme, which includes replacing key infrastructure – such as track, overhead lines and the distribution system that provides power to trams. And the new arrangement, spanning up to 12 years and starting in 2027, could also cover a wider range of additional works – including Metrolink stop improvements, new Metrolink stops, line extensions, next-generation vehicle infrastructure, Access for All rail schemes and Travel Hubs.

The initial market engagement phase will allow interested suppliers to provide feedback on the proposed approach to delivery, taking into account its potential scale, variety and complexity.

The contract will run during a period of significant change and delivery for Greater Manchester, with the city-region driving investment and development in transport, housing and innovation to boost growth, create jobs and deliver benefits across all boroughs.
