Lokaltog A/S has exercised an option from its October 2024 contract with Stadler to purchase ten additional battery-powered FLIRT Akku trains. The new units, set to enter service in 2029, will support the operator’s goal of delivering emission-free rail services in eastern Denmark.

Lars Wrist-Elkjær, CEO of Lokaltog, welcomed the decision by Region Zealand to fund the purchase. “The battery trains are of great importance to Lokaltog’s contribution to the green transition, and at the same time we can ensure stronger robustness in our operations,” he said.
The FLIRT Akku model can run up to 100 kilometres on battery power alone, recharging under overhead lines or via regenerative braking. In 2021, the type set a Guinness World Record by covering 224 kilometres on a single charge without recharging. Stadler currently holds a 50% market share in Europe’s battery train segment and also develops hydrogen and hybrid solutions.
