Temporary cable car replaces destroyed bridge (Seilbahnen)

A temporary cable car has been operating since February 17, 2025, between the villages of Champsec and Sarreyer in Switzerland. It serves as a supplement to the transportation network until the road bridge, destroyed by the Fregnoley stream, is rebuilt—and demonstrates how quickly urban cable cars can be implemented.

In July 2024, severe storms hit the region. Heavy rainfall led to flooding, landslides, and debris flows that caused significant damage in the valley. The bridge on the cantonal road between Lourtier and Sarreyer was washed away, cutting off Sarreyer from the outside world.

Since then, the village could only be accessed via a forestry road, the Route du Soleil. According to Google Maps, the drive between the villages of Champsec and Sarreyer takes about 26 minutes. The new cable car has significantly reduced the travel time.
