I wouldn’t like to guess what afternoon tea at the Midland Hotel in Manchester costs now, but in the 60s it was thought affordable by an impecunious student. And nice that the hotel is still called after the railway company, unlike the much-lamented North British in Edinburgh.

Yes, well I live opposite a large girls’s school, which has 2 bus routes going past & is about 6 minutes walk from a major (outer-London/Zone 3) nexus – i.e three rail routes & a large bus station.
The roads at turning out time are total chaos, because the little darlings are either too delicate to take a bus, or walk, or their parents are ridiculously paranoid.
Admittedly, the local council are making attempts to restrict parking from non-residents during those hours – we will see ..
