DfT ‘unclear’ on status of safeguarding for revised Crossrail 2 route (NewCivilEngineer)

The status of the safeguarding for the revised Crossrail 2 route is uncertain after the Department for Transport (DfT) failed to answer a peer’s question about the process. Transport for London (TfL) said “discussions continue” with the DfT on safeguarding for the revised route.

While the project remains officially mothballed, the mayor of London’s recently released London Plan said that safeguarding the Crossrail 2 route is a priority for the next 10 years…

What is Crossrail 2 and its revised route?

Crossrail 2 is a proposed Hertfordshire to Surrey railway megaproject which was suspended in 2020 due to projected costs being too high. In 2021, TfL commissioner Andy Byford said that the scheme “will still be needed in the future” but conceded that it will not be realistically affordable before 2030. NCE revealed in 2021 that £115M had been spent on the project. DfT spent £58.4M on development work, while TfL spent £57.3M.
