This item has appeared in several blogs & entries, but it is very depressing to read of the amazingly petty infighting between (At least) Hammersmith Council, TfL, the GLA & National government ….
Yes, repairing or replacing (?) the bridge is going to be costly, but the end-result of all the various playground squabbles is just that it’s going to cost even more as time goes by.
@Greg I don’t think many folk would disagree, but we should acknowledge the lengthy local political history that left a single local authority on one side of a river entirely responsible for funding the upkeep of a listed heritage bridge while the larger wealthier one on the other side (and the similar adjacent one close by) didn’t have to pay a penny, with the city-wide authority and the national government also both able to look the other way and wash their hands of any responsibility.
One might even say the whole saga typifies the failures and inequalities of the British political system in a nutshell.
