A groundbreaking British project is using artificial intelligence to give locomotives the once-over. The aptly named DepotMATE (Multi-sensor Automated Train Examination) project, which has been backed by the Department for Transport, is developing a system that uses sensors and AI to automatically inspect trains in depots, keeping passengers safe and trains running smoothly…
DepotMATE scans trains using AI, which hunts for faults including overheating bearings or faulty brakes. The system uses cameras, thermal sensors, and microphones to gather data on everything from wheel cleanliness to the health of vital components. Once it has collected this information, it will then be fed into AI models. The models can then spot potential problems before they turn into major breakdowns.
