I bought a ticket at Flitwick Rail Station this last weekend, using my Senior Railcard, but it would not let me through the ticket barrier. I asked the staff member who let me through why, and he replied that: all tickets bought with Railcards are blocked now, not just Senior Railcards, but ALL Railcards, to stop cheats buying lower price tickets. When I got to West Hampstead Thameslink, there was no staff member at the gate. I had to first press a button for assistance, then show my ticket and Senior Rail card to a camera (as did several other passengers) to get out the station. I think they must have introduced this measure some time ago, but have not read anything about it, as I had just thought I had damaged a previous all zones card as I had to find a staff member at every gate. Surely in this day and age there must be an easier way to catch or deter fare dodgers than penalising and causing inconvenience to all Railcard users?
