$16bn New York City tunnel learning from London tunnel projects (NewCivilEng)

A key member of the newly formed project team set to build the $16bn (£13bn) Hudson Tunnel Project has said how early designs and plans for the scheme are taking learnings from similar tunnelling projects that have taken place in London and the UK.

The two tunnels will be used by rail and will link Secaucus Station in New Jersey to Penn Station in Manhattan. This new rail route will be close to the existing North River Tunnel, which was built in 1910 but suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. As part of the project, refurbishment works will take also place on both this tunnel’s tubes. There are currently 450 trains that use the North River Tunnel everyday so taking it out of action for repairs is impossible.
