The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority has started work to establish a framework for the future management of the Supertram light rail network in Sheffield, which is due to be taken over by an arm’s length public sector company when Stagecoach’s current operating contract expires in March 2024.
The move is intended to support SYMCA’s wider ambitions to upgrade Supertram as part of a fully integrated public transport network. The authority has secured a £100m government grant for modernisation, including track and infrastructure improvements and better passenger facilities.
‘This time next year our iconic Supertram will begin its new chapter in public hands, an exciting step on our journey to fixing our public transport’, explained Mayor Oliver Coppard.
