    The best-staged performance of another “G&S” I have seen set “the Mikado” at the time of the Russo-Japanese war …
    A suitably dark production. But with the line “The Emperor’s Train is approaching!” – a model of a late C19th train pulled across the back of the stage, from which emerged the Mikado himself ….
    Oh & ENO did an hilarious production of “Semele”, which was set in the then-present (1990-ish). When Hera/Juno had to be: “We must off to the realms of Day” … searching in her handbag for something, her assistant going frantic … until she held up what she was searching for – an oversized Concorde ticket!

    Lund seem to have the right idea …..
