The authority on this is a US academic Edward Tufte, whose books on the subject are a highly-recommended ( If not actually compulsory ) read around the subject.

I note that no extensions appear to be proposed for Sheffield Trams, which indicates a serious failure of imagination, unfortunately.
@ Greg : The article mentions an extension of “Tram Train” into the Dearne Valley
Timbeau – that would be along existing “BR” rail tracks, not a proper tram extension, say down the Abbeyfield Road to Totley
