TfL have announced that they intend to drop general weekday District services to Olympia from the December timetable change onwards.
Although full details are not yet available, it appears that the intention is to limit District services to Olympia to weekends and designated “special events.” This then relieves pressure at Earls Court meaning more Wimbledon services can be run in the peak.
The change is one that would potentially be of major benefit to customers. Better Overground services to Olympia are now in place, meaning that its not as great a loss as it might be, and that particular part of the line is not heavily used when there aren’t events on at Olympia itself.
That said, it’ll be interesting to see just what counts as a “special event” and how reopening the service for those then impacts on the extra Wimbledon services promised. For whilst most will welcome an increase in Wimbledon services (which represent a not-insignificant part of the line’s traffic), they’ll be less enthused if those extra services seem to be withdrawn again at frequent intervals.
